Country Backdrop
When Bangladesh emerged as an independent and sovereign state at the end of a long people's movement and armed struggle, its citizens looked towards a society based on high human values. The new nation moved forward with a sense of urgency for establishing a democratic, secular and just society, where every citizen would live with human dignity. Nearly 35 years on, Bangladeshi citizens today are yet to enjoy the benefits of democratic institutions at all levels. Citizens at all levels, particularly those marginalized and lacking access to resources, consistently suffer social injustice, inequality, and destitution - the direct and indirect results of dysfunctional institutions and lack of people's participation in governance and their own empowerment. Taking into account this situation, a group of concerned citizens including lawyers, academicians, researchers, and development practitioners, have united under the banner of “ Society of Justice” to contribute in some way towards achieving social justice, as espoused in the founding principles of the nation.
